What is wrong with our garden??

We started off well...we had a lot of sprouting, got so excited thinking that we were going to have a nice, bushy, producing garden, then nothing!! We water, weed, fertilize, have good soil...seriously, what is wrong with our garden??(please stop laughing)
I'm looking for advice, suggestions, tricks, books to read...seriously, how do you garden??
To make matter's worse...this is our neighbor, who planted after us, "Mr. John Deere" garden...
Seriously.

My few little plants had a slow start, especially the poor tomatoes who were eaten by starlings. (true) But with Miracle Grow, we might get there if the good warm weather holds till December. How about some compost worked into the soil, just buy a bag, it is kind of stinky.
i garden just like that...maybe it's not in our genes (jk everyone!)
